La Niña zum x-ten mal

In the wake of the 2009-2010 Wet Season’s strong El Nino, La Nina conditions have been rapidly developing in the equatorial Pacific Ocean this summer. The Climate Prediction Center’s forecast model, as well as other seasonal climate models from various meteorological centers around the world, is now forecasting a moderate to strong La Nina for the upcoming 2010-2011 Wet Season. The Climate Prediction Center currently has a La Nina Advisory in effect with expectation that La Nina conditions will persist through at least early 2011.

Snow falls in the B.C. mountains

The North Shore Mountains in British Columbia saw their first light dusting of snow this week. And for many, that serves as a reminder that ski season is just around the corner.

“It's been a long summer. A good summer, we've enjoyed the sun, but we're ready for winter,” says Jon Mosley, a spokesperson for Mount Seymour. “It's right at the perfect time of year, late October. We just have to wait a few more weeks and we'll be in operation!”

Temperatures were cool enough for snow this week in the higher elevations of BC. A base of nearly 40 cm has formed in the alpine peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. The ski season at Whistler Blackcomb is scheduled to kick off on November 25.

Last weekend, snow was falling in parts of the Interior.

The province is expected to see a cold and wet winter this year because of the effects of La Nina.

“There is going to be more snow expected in the city and on the hills this year. It's definitely good news to all of us on the mountain,” says Julie Mulligan, a spokesperson for the resort at Mount Seymour, north of Vancouver.

Mosely agrees, but doesn't want to jump to conclusions just yet. “I hate to jinx it by saying it's going to be great, but the almanacs and the forecasts so far are hinting that it should be a good one, so we're really excited and holding our breath a little, hoping it will be great!”

We’re headed into a La Niña year the likes of which haven’t been seen since 1955, according to Washington state climatologist Nick Bond.

“It’s shaping up to be a lively one,” Bond said Thursday, before adding a typical forecaster’s warning.

Minimale Änderungen auf der Sonnenoberfläche können weitreichende Folgen auf unserem Planeten haben. Zwischen 1645 und 1715 zeigten sich auf unserem Zentralgestirn kaum Sonnenflecken. In dieser Zeit, auch Maunder-Minimum genannt, wurde es auf der Erde kühl. Geologen bezeichnen die Phase als kleine Eiszeit.

A La Niña weather phenomenon, the lesser-known cousin of the more famous El Nino weather anomaly, will most likely develop in the second half of 2010, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center said Thursday.

La Niña — the unusual cooling of water in the Pacific Ocean — will cause more
rainfall and varying temperatures. Those conditions generally mean a great snow year at Cypress Mountain!
